Chapter Twenty-Seven

FBI Field Office

Albany, NY

The ping of the elevator chimes as Skylar and I arrive in the cyber hub. Our teams worked quickly to access Wolfe’s security cameras. Hope reignited in me a few minutes ago when Cheetah messaged saying there was something we would want to see.

“It smells like feet and seed oils down here,” Skylar says, turning up her nose. “I think Reuben’s dirty gym clothes smell better than this joint. And that’s saying something.”

“So what did you find?” I ask Cheetah as we arrive at his station.

“I don’t really know what it is. I can’t describe it. Hang on.” His fingers drag across his trackpad until he’s brought up the exterior camera footage facing the garage. Within moments, we’re watching as Wolfe’s car pulls into the garage. The timestamp shows 8:07 p.m. Just after the car rolls out of sight and the door comes down, Cheetah pauses the video with a click of the space bar.

Skylar’s brows shoot up. “That’s it?”

“No, I was just showing you when the guy got home. Wait, there’s more. A lot more.” Cheetah pokes away at his keyboard.

“You’re rather cryptic today,” Skylar tells him.

“Patience, grasshopper,” I say, placing a hand on her shoulder.

The time stamp on the segment is two hours earlier that same day, but the angle is from the front doorbell camera this time. The three of us huddle together as we watch a large, unmarked delivery van creep into frame. The plates are too far away to read, and the driver is nothing more than a dark blob, but it is obvious that the van stops for a brief moment right in front of the house. Despite the fuzziness, the sound of the van door opening and closing on the side opposite the camera is clear. Then, without warning, the footage goes black.

“What happened?” I ask.

“I hate to say that I don’t know. But Parsons probably figured out a way to hack into the security system remotely. The cameras are hooked up to the Wi-Fi, so theoretically, he’d just need a password and some industry knowledge to pull it off.”

“So another dead end,” Skylar says through a sigh.

“Oh, no, it isn’t.” He taps several keys and pulls up another video. “I told you there was a lot more. From here, it gets strange. What’s weird about this one is that if Parsons had access to the cameras, you would think he’d have shut all of them off. The one facing the driveway from the garage door, though, was on the whole time. It never went black. When we get to ten thirty-eight p.m…” Cheetah fast forwards. “Here, you can tell the garage door opens. See that patch of light on the concrete?”

Skylar and I nod. “Yeah.”

“Timewise, it makes sense. I mean I wouldn't know how long it takes to kill someone and paint their entire car, but I would assume it could be done over a couple hours. Look what happens next.”

The stream of light on the pavement highlights a shadowy figure that emerges from out of frame.
